Universal Magnetic Systems LLC (UMS) was formed in October 2012 and licensed intellectual property from the University of Minnesota related to the research of Dr. Jian Ping Wang. Dr. Wang, Distinguished McKnight University Professor in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, University of Minnesota, has developed methods
for producing very high magnetic strength non – rare earth (NRE) nanoparticles. Professor Wang’s magnetic nanoparticle research has been widely published in peer reviewed scientific journals, frequently presented at scientific conferences, and accepted as world class state – of – the – art technology. Using the technology developed by Dr. Wang, UMS is initiating production of high strength iron cobalt superparamagnetic nanoparticles to meet the requirements of existing and rapidly growing in vitro diagnostics markets. The exciting technologies licensed by UMS fit existing unique niches and will be of great value in future applications in biotechnology, medical diagnostics, catalysis, communications, and energy production.
UMS is commercializing these nanoparticles in the United States and internationally.
The initial market for these high magnetic moment superparamagnetic nanoparticles with surface functionalization will be in in vitro diagnostic applications, such as immunoassay, cell separation, and flow cytometry. These nanoparticles can be applied
to isolation of antigens, proteins, and peptides.
